How to Write an Ad That Sells Fast
06 Aug 2026
A good listing gets more views, more genuine enquiries, and sells faster than a rushed one - often for a better price too. Here's what actually makes the difference, based on what buyers respond to.
Start with a clear, specific title
"iPhone 13 128GB Blue, Excellent Condition, Unlocked" tells a buyer far more at a glance than simply "iPhone for sale", and it's also what people are actually searching for. Include the brand, model, size, colour, or whatever detail matters most for that category - buyers searching Ads UK, and search engines indexing your ad, both reward specificity over vague descriptions.
Add several photos, not just one
Listings with five or more clear photos consistently get more views and more messages than listings with a single image, because buyers want to see an item from multiple angles - front, back, close-ups of any wear, and any accessories included - before they commit to messaging you. Natural daylight makes a huge difference to photo quality; avoid dark rooms and heavy flash where possible, and try to use a plain, uncluttered background so the item itself is the focus.
Write an honest, detailed description
Mention the item's age, condition, any flaws, why you're selling, and what's included (original box, charger, accessories, and so on). Buyers who feel they know exactly what they're getting are far more likely to follow through with a purchase than those left guessing - and you'll get fewer time-wasting questions asking things your description could have already answered.
Be honest and realistic about price
Overpricing an item means your ad sits unsold for weeks while buyers scroll past it in favour of better-priced alternatives; underpricing means you lose money you didn't need to. Before listing, take five minutes to check what similar items are currently listed for nearby, and price competitively - a small amount of room for negotiation is normal and expected on classifieds sites, but starting too high just wastes everyone's time.
Choose the right category and location
Ads UK buyers filter by category and by location, so a listing in the wrong category, or with a vague or missing location, is far less likely to be found by the people actually looking for it. Take a moment to double check both before publishing.
Respond to messages promptly
Buyers often message several sellers about similar items at once, and it's very often the first clear, helpful reply that gets the sale - not necessarily the lowest price. A quick, friendly response answering their question, confirming availability, and suggesting a time to view or collect makes a real difference to your conversion rate.
Keep your ad up to date
If an item's price changes, edit the listing rather than starting a new one - it keeps your existing views and messages. And once it's sold, mark the ad as sold straight away, so you stop receiving messages about an item that's no longer available, and so buyers browsing the category see accurate, current stock.
None of this takes much extra time, but together it's the difference between an ad that sits ignored for a month and one that sells within days.
